Likewise, I&#8217;ve seen a multitude of names, some being good, some not so hot. Being new to the internet culture, I started off with the typical initials and numbers for lack of anything better.<\/p>\n<p>Over time, a profile name goes from being some letters and numbers to a true online identity with your personal reputation and ego attached. Your name is often the only thing other people will have to associate you with and first impressions on the internet work the same as in real life.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Good communication requires:<\/strong><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<ul class=\"list4\">\n<li>a name you can type quickly<\/li>\n<li>a name you can say quickly<\/li>\n<li>if long, a name that can be abbreviated into short form<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Avoid using:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul class=\"list4\">\n<li>\u1ef0\u03b7\u1ecb\u03c2\u03c3\u0111\u04bd lettering<\/li>\n<li>l337 speak<\/li>\n<li>excessive non-alphanumerics<\/li>\n<li>a Dr or Mr prefix<\/li>\n<li>military prefixes<\/li>\n<li>internet memes<\/li>\n<li>numerical digits after name<\/li>\n<li>alternating capitals<\/li>\n<li>so many tags that your name is indiscernible<\/li>\n<li>xXx _____ xXx<\/li>\n<li>your year of birth<\/li>\n<li>your date of birth<\/li>\n<li>your age<\/li>\n<li>your initials<\/li>\n<li>your full, real name<\/li>\n<li>your Social Security number<\/li>\n<li>a name you can&#8217;t say<\/li>\n<li>a name that&#8217;s too long<\/li>\n<li>a name that is unintentionally spelled wrong<\/li>\n<li>obscene names<\/li>\n<li>common names, especially &#8220;shadow,&#8221; &#8220;gamer,&#8221; &#8220;gurl,&#8221; or &#8220;unnamed&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Just a note, if you really like a common name, add something to make it personal. A great one would be for example, Loki \u2192 LokiJester.<\/p>\n<p>There are some benefits from restricting yourself to these guidelines: it is more likely that people will communicate with you, remember you, believe that you are older, or overall hold more respect for you and your playing abilities. In games where teamwork is required, this can directly affect the assistance you receive.
