Mirror’s Edge
There were three games that I’ve been following the development on closely for they look(ed) really promising. Alone in the Dark was one of them but it was released recently to some poor reviews despite the unique gameplay aspects and item mechanics it uses. Another was delayed and is now not scheduled to come out until next year (I’ll discuss that one in a later post). The third is a game called Mirror’s Edge developed by DICE, first announced in the summer of 2007. Mirror’s Edge is a first-person action adventure game with some shooter elements. Although the emphasize is on avoidance rather than fighting. When I first heard about it, I was mildly intrigued as the mention of parkour elements being a core part of the game play. I had already given thought to how cool a game with parkour or free running would be. It wouldn’t even need to be a parkour game. It would just need to include it.
But everything changed when I saw the first screenshot earlier this year. The clean, bright look instantly had me. It seems all realistic games today are going for that brown look. And being a futuristic dystopian world, I would have thought that especially true because you can’t have a totalitarian world without metropolitan decay. But the whites were bright and the reds were vivid. The sky was clear with no sign of any air pollution. The screenshots also showed something else different. Even though the game was first person, you could see the player’s body. Which I can imagine would help in a game where you need to know body positioning.
In May, they released the first gameplay video. I was truly left speechless. It looks amazing. I challenge anyone who calls themselves a gamer and enjoys action games not to get all tingly. It doesn’t have a set release date other than late 2008 but I will try to keep you updated on any new developments.
