Disabling Win Music for Day of Defeat: Source
We recently started playing Day of Defeat: Source. It’s an enjoyable game with one major problem: at the end of every round, a sound clip plays representing the winning team. This sound is blaringly loud. This is not a problem, you think to yourself, I’ll just go turn down the music. So you go into your options and turn down the music. Next round ends and the music seems just as loud. You turn it all the way down and still the music deafens.
The problem is that win music is part of the game sounds volume and turning that down gets rid of the sounds you want to hear, namely the gunshots and footsteps. So I did some research trying to find some way to reduce the sound.
Replacing the files was given as an option. To do that, go to “C:\Program Files\Valve\Steam\SteamApps\**your name**\day of defeat source\dod\sound\ambient” and create two files. These can be any kind of file so let’s create text files. Now rename those text files to “us_win.mp3”and “german_win.mp3”. This will basically make it where you won’t hear any win music. You can also use actual mp3s that have had the volume adjusted and length shortened.
I jumped into a listen server and tested it after doing the previous and it worked. The only problem was once I jumped onto the server I usually play on, the music was back. The first thing that comes to mind is if the servers I play on are pure servers. I check and yes they are. That means I can’t run modified files on their servers. I needed another solution and found it in the Steam forums.
A cvar was recently added that addresses this problem. To add this cvar, go to this directory “C:\Program Files\Valve\Steam\SteamApps\**your name**\day of defeat source\dod\cfg” and look for a file called “autoexec.cfg”. If it does not exist, create a text file in that directory and rename it “autoexec.cfg”. Open the file and go to the bottom and add the following line, “dod_playwinmusic 0”. Save the file and that’s it.
Round ends are now eerily silent as most people still have that music playing and can’t really hear anything.

Good work Seyon. I added the code and I’ll give it a try once I play again.
