Clean Screenshots in TF2

Team Fortress 2 is an extremely stylistic, beautiful game, especially in comparison to other FPSs of this day and age. It’s a shame though that a possibly fantastic deathcam shot will be obscured by your killer’s name, their weapon, their weapon’s stats, their hats, if they are your nemesis, and/or your labeled gibs. Wouldn’t it be nice to just get a clean screenshot?

Well, you can.

These resource files were originally found by Domino on a forum thread that is now locked to the public – they remove the Valve-created GUI boxes that obscure a deathcam. It will not work, however, on any server overlayed elements, e.g. “Respawning in x seconds,” advertisements, or HLStats.

Instructions:
1. Download the cleanscreen files here.
2. Decide which options you want to use:

  • Choose one of these two files. If you decide on the second file, you will have to rename it to FreezePanel_Basic.res.
    • FreezePanel_Basic.res – Removes who you were killed by and their weapon or hat. You will not be able to see their health as it is associated with their name.
    • NoWeapon_FreezePanel_Basic.res – Removes only the weapon or hat your killer has equipped. You will still be able to see their health.
  • FreezePanelCallout.res – Removes your gib labels.
  • StatPanel_Base.res – Removes the “On the bright side…” box which pops up when you get close to or beat a personal record.

3. Copy the files into your “team fortress 2\tf\resource\ui” folder. If the “ui” folder does not exist, you will have to create it.

If you ever want the original GUI back, just delete the files.

Thanks a lot. Would’ve taken me another couple days to figure out where the gib labels were.
