Recently Completed Cleanup

I’ve been chugging along completing games, trying to reduce the size of my “to play” list that seems to grow more often than it shrinks. Following are some brief thoughts about the games that I’ve finished but didn’t write on:

In Conclusion: Oblivion

It was months ago that I finally finished The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion, by Bethesda Softworks. I say “finally” but not in a negative way; it comes from playing the game for over a year and doing ever bit of content available in the game. I did all the main quests. I did all the city, village, faction, master training, Daedric, and miscellaneous quests. I even did ones that had no journal entry.

I could give a nice long review of all the good things and few annoyances of this game but honestly, I’m probably way too biased. So in lieu of listening to a raving fanboy, I will give you assorted statistical numbers from my time spent in Cyrodiil.

Let’s just start with some basics. My character was a female Ainmhi, which is a custom race of cat girls, named Sarah. Mine just so happened to also be a futanari. (A Google search on that term is NOT SAFE FOR WORK.)

Far Cry 2

I loved Far Cry, but Ubisoft’s second incarnation of the “series” had nothing to do with it. The original was developed by Crytek, who, since they didn’t own the rights, went on to make Crysis. The story itself played out in the tropics with a heavy sci-fi influence. Far Cry 2 completely drops those elements and takes place in a totally different environment, making me wonder how it’s considered a sequel as there are no connections to its predecessor.

Now for realism.

Backlog: Mirror’s Edge

I had been dying for a game that made parkour more than just pushing a button to scale anything – Mirror’s Edge ended up being that game for me. Being the eternal eye-candy gamer, from the first trailer I saw I was in love of the visuals. The whole world has a very utopian look: everything is clean, organized, almost dream-like with lots of bloom. This idealistic society is a facade though, playing counter to the military-state rule.

As I don’t do well with first person shooters on the console, I thought I might have problems with the control scheme and I did. My first look at Mirror’s Edge was when I downloaded the demo on the Xbox 360 – the experience turned out to be so bad that I was thinking I would have to pass on the game. I decided to wait and try it out on the PC and I’m glad I did.

Backlog: Grand Theft Auto 4

I’ve had a long history with Grand Theft Auto games: I went to two midnight release parties for Vice City and San Andreas and played San Andreas and Grand Theft Auto 4 through to completion with 100% progress. I’ve always loved the series and end up spending way too much time just screwing around in-game.

When Grand Theft Auto 4 (GTA4) came out, I didn’t yet own a Xbox360 and so didn’t immediately get to play it. Many months later though when I did get a 360, it was the first game I played.

GTA4 is a large pull back from the over-the-top gameplay we saw in the earlier games. While still a GTA game with car theft and mass murder, jet packs, monster trucks and jet fighters are no where to be seen, and there is a much more realistic tone overall.

Backlog: Mass Effect

Since we’ve had this website, there were games that I completed but never really wrote about. I always fully intended to do a write up on each of them, but for one reason or another, didn’t. I would like to do a series of very quick write ups about each of them, the first being Mass Effect.

Mass Effect is a game developed by BioWare, which was released in November of 2007. There was some controversy about the game in part due to the possible girl on alien girl scene which is sad as it had little to do with the story.

Let’s start with the customization. While you play a character named Commander Shepard, you can play either as a male or female character. You choose some of your back history but character appearance is where the customization is deep. There are some facial presets but for those who want more control of character looks, there are many sliders for specific adjustment.

We Will Be There Soon

Over the Thanksgiving holiday of last year, I performed a gaming trifecta: I finished two games and got 100% completion on the other. I never got around to talking about those games. One of those games was Assassin’s Creed.

Assassin’s Creed is a parkour assassination game set in a fictional Holy Crusade period. You play an assassin named Altair who must perform a series of assassinations with ever increasing difficulty. Sadly, I can’t give much more story detail without giving away too much.

Crysis

crysis01
I was excited when I heard that Crytek, maker of Far Cry, was making a new game. I enjoyed Far Cry and it had beautiful visuals, so I expected much of the same from their new game, Crysis. As game release approached, I realized something very terrifying: I needed a new PC to play this game. I had planned on waiting before I got my new PC but this game was going to push up the date. It ended up being one of the first non-Valve game I installed, and I finished it not too long after. So, did Crysis justify the purchase of a new PC?
