Ghosts of Ascalon

Ghosts of Ascalon, written by Matt Forbeck and Jeff Grubb, is a novel set in the fictional land of Tyria, home of the best-selling game Guild Wars. The story takes place 250 years after the original game and tells much of what has happened between then and the upcoming Guild Wars 2, although the book’s events occur within a span of less than two weeks.

The basic story is that 250 years ago, King Adelbern summoned the Forefire to kill his foes during a Charr invasion of Ascalon City. While managing to kill the Charr, he cursed all of his own soldiers who then became eternal ghost watchmen of the ruined city. Jump forward to current day. A group of quarreling adventurers from very different backgrounds must travel to Ascalon and retrieve an artifact that could bring peace between the warring humans and Charr.

The book is an easy, fast read coming in at 370 pages with a fairly straight-forward story and a couple of surprises. I feel people who are planning on playing Guild Wars 2 will get the most out of the book as it really gives a good base for the story.

With all that said, I enjoyed the Ghosts of Ascalon and look forward to (hopefully) seeing some of the characters in-game.
